The Price of Poverty: Artists in the Northland

The Duluth News Tribune has just published a major series on the struggles of artists with personal poverty. It’s worth taking a look.

One key premise: that despite the important role that artists play in the economy, especially in a place like the Duluth/Superior region, the economy is hard on them.

Sunday’s key article set the stage about the economic problems of artists.

DNT writer Ann Klefstad, herself an artist, wrote a column about how many artists do a good job not looking poor.

Sunday also had a series of profiles about the economic life of a few specific artists: James Moors, Diane Chaney, and Juliana Berkelsen. There is also video and more photographs on the News Tribune website.

Monday’s lead story was about efforts to help artists with the business side of being artists.

There was also a strong connection to the KCCI Art Works team.
